On the Issues

I’m running for Congress because I love this area of our state, and I want to build our economy, support our families and preserve our values. I want to help create opportunities for middle class families so they can provide for their children and care for their parents. My friends are teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, office workers and retirees. My neighbors work hard every day to pay their bills.

There are already enough lawyers and millionaires in Washington who are out of touch with the real world. The partisan bickering serves no one. If I have the privilege of representing you in Congress, I will work hard every day to serve your interests, not special interests.

The policies and priorities of Washington and Wall Street have taken us to the brink of disaster, and the middle class is being hit the hardest. Many of our friends and neighbors have lost their jobs, their retirement accounts, and even their homes. While some claim that the recession is ending, our economy is not a chart, or a graph, or the latest statistic on the news. The recession will never be over for central Florida until people are back at work and can afford to provide for their families.

Millions of Americans are unable to afford any health insurance or are denied insurance because of prior illness. People who have health insurance are paying too much because they are bearing the financial burden of care for the uninsured. Most small businesses struggle to find affordable health care to offer their employees.

As more and more veterans return from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is our responsibility to see that they get the care that they have earned. Earlier this year the Veteran’s Administration admitted that there are over one million claims currently pending, and individual claims are taking months to be resolved.

The war in Iraq has now lasted longer than World War II, and we should continue bringing home our men and women in uniform. It’s time to honor these men and women for their dedication and bravery, and it’s time to do everything we can to help them heal and restart the lives they put on hold.

When we were attacked on September 11th, we were forced to defend ourselves and to remove the threat of Al Qaeda and their sponsors, the Taliban. The Taliban no longer rule Afghanistan, and we have fractured the leadership of Al Qaeda. We have also given the Afghan people a chance to elect their own government.
